The Role

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual with a strong technical accounting background to join our team on an initial 12-month Fixed Term Contract, to provide timely and accurate financial and management accounting reports, and to provide support to the CFO.

Key Responsibilities will include:

Financial/Management Accounting:

  • Accurate and timely preparation of annual statutory financial statements for MIOD, CLIA and PIA.
  • Accurate and timely preparation of Management accounts for MIOD.
  • Update forecast model each month for MIOD Management and Tokyo Head Office review and provide recommendation for reporting process improvements.
  • Monitor MIOD’s Key Performance indicators (KPIs) and provide findings/recommendation to Tokyo/Management.
  • Preparation of Monthly Management Report including analysis of variances and interpretation of results for presentation to MIOD Management and Tokyo Head Office.
  • Review MIOD’s Corporate Plan and Profit Forecast (Budget) and provide findings/recommendations to Management.
  • Supervise preparation and circulation of monthly sales analysis report to MIOD Management and Tokyo Head Office.
  • Review and analysis of RRIA JV operating and financial reports to ensure they are in line with legal agreements and provide findings/recommendations to MIOD Management.
  • Identify the cost drivers for the RRIA JV mines, ports and power stations and continually liaise with the Joint Venture operator personnel to assist in understanding the variances and explaining them.
  • Responsible for the quarterly financial reporting process for submission to Tokyo Head Office, including directly responding to queries from Tokyo.
  • Accounting for MIOD investments in joint ventures, partnerships and equity accounted investments.
  • Preparation of technical accounting position papers.
  • Review and approve monthly and quarterly General Ledger Reconciliations to ensure compliance with Accounting Standards.
  • Responsible for maintenance of legal sales database and general ledger chart of accounts in accordance to Mitsui Group Accounting Manual (GAM), IFRS and J-SOX internal control processes.
  • Responsible for implementation or changes to Tokyo Head Office systems with MIOD, including SAP Financial Consolidation   


  • Ensure compliance with Group Accounting Policies, International Financial Reporting Standards and J-SOX internal control procedures.
  • Maintaining documentation of processes.
  • Responsible for coordinating the audit process on statutory accounts and quarterly financial reporting.

Staff Management & Development:

  • Monitor, manage and review the work of direct report(s) to ensure responsibilities and tasks are achieved to high standards.
  • Carry out performance reviews for direct report(s).
  • Establish KPIs and development plans for direct report(s).
  • Provide training and guidance to new staff as required.  

 Administration / Company Secretarial

  • Preparation of MIOD resolutions relating to dividends, Joint Venture approvals and legal documentation.
  • Assist in preparation of Ringi documentation to be submitted for approval as required.
  • Maintain, review and improve procedural policy documentation of all Accounting and Administrative functions where appropriate.
  • Supervise the Accounts Payable and Receivable function for MIOD.

With well-honed communication and interpersonal skills, a thorough understanding of IFRS and the ability to meet tight deadlines.  As part of your role, you will build and maintain pro-active working relationships and rapport with colleagues and external contacts.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Tertiary degree in Commerce/Business (Accounting).
  • CA/CPA qualified.
  • Demonstrated experience in a management and/or financial accounting role within the mining industry.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing staff.
  • Strong technical accounting background, with exposure to joint ventures.
  • Advanced computer skills including use of MS Office Suite and ERP systems (experience using Pronto would be an advantage).
