The Role

Financial Management Division (FMD) is seeking a Senior Tax Accountant to join their team for a period of 12 months. This role is responsible for assisting with the management the tax requirement for Mitsui & Co (Australia) Ltd and the consolidated group. It also provides effective compliance and consulting taxation services (direct and indirect taxes) within the Mitsui group and manage an array of internal and external stakeholders across the various business lines.

Key responsibilities in the role are:

  • Co-ordinate and manage completion of the consolidated tax return and supporting schedules.
  • Liaise with the Tax Advisors and group companies to ensure that income tax returns are lodged prior to the statutory deadline.
  • Provide tax advice and support to Business Divisions, Group Companies and investments in Australia.
  • Review the Annual Compliance Review of the APA agreement for MCA and Mitsui & Co. Ltd APA and ensure compliance is maintained annually.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly BAS for Mitsui group companies.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual Fringe Benefits Tax Returns.
  • Assist in the reporting of monthly PAYG instalments.
  • Act as a point of contact for the ATO and attend meetings on an ad hoc basis to discuss the Mitsui group and tax related matters.
  • Ongoing liaisons with the Accounting and Tax teams in head office and Asia Pacific Business Unit (APBU) offices regarding tax reporting.
  • Review quarterly MCA standalone and MCA tax consolidated group tax effect accounting numbers.
  • Establish and maintain the relationship with Mitsui group companies, management and external professional consultants and agents.
  • Assist on special projects as required.


The Person

You will enjoy working within a successful team of talented individuals and bring your own proven experience to the business and you have the following qualifications, experience and skills:

  • Commerce or business related degree is essential.
  • Experience in a Chartered firm or corporate experience working in a tax-related position.
  • CA/CPA qualified and postgraduate qualifications in taxation are preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Australian income tax legislation and global development in international tax.
  • Experience in providing senior management with advice and guidance on tax related matters, including reporting to directors in board meetings.
  • Experience in dealing and liaising with the ATO (either as the primary contact or assist in dealings with the ATO) is an advantage.
  • Business acumen with demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to analyse tax issues, develop and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Experience in managing and developing staff.
  • Excellent communication skills to draft correspondence for internal/external stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with ability to prioritise and co-ordinate work to meet deadlines.
  • Sensitivity to other cultures.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff.
  • Competent in the use of tax software programs and experience using CCH Global Integrator is an advantage.
