The Company

Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Ltd (MEPAU) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui & Co. Ltd. We operate as regional headquarters for Mitsui’s oil and gas exploration and production business in Australia and New Zealand.

The Role 

MEPAU is seeking an experienced and passionate HSE Manager to join the team on an initial fixed-term 2 year contract.  This role is responsible for leading the HSE team, the corporate MEPAU HSE function and ensuring safety and compliance.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead the HSE team – ensuring sufficient resources are available to ensure HSE support across the breadth of MEPAU activities.
  • Lead the development, and foster the implementation of, the MEPAU HSEMS and associated documents.
  • Provide guidance to Senior Management on Statutory and Company HSE Requirements and of best industry practice.
  • Coordinate incident management processes, including incident investigation, injury management and follow up of root cause analysis processes.
  • Coordinate and maintain statistical records of all reported incidents and accidents, and other leading and lagging HSE performance metrics, ensuring regulatory reporting requirements are achieved.
  • Implement, report on, and continuously improve Key Performance Indicators as benchmarked against other E&P companies
  • Overall management of the HSE Budget
  • Provide subject matter expertise to support safety and risk management activities across the MEPAU petroleum assets and operations.
  • Provide technical safety support to all operational activities, including construction, drilling, well intervention, and operations/maintenance and decommissioning.
  • Assist in the development of or update to operational the SMS / Safety Cases.
  • Monitor compliance with regulator approved SMS/Safety Cases and all legal, statutory and corporate HSEMS requirements
  • Participate in HAZID and Risk Workshops for MEPAU operational activities.
  • Work with the Procurement & Contracts team to review contractor HSE evaluations and performance

    You will enjoy working within a successful team of talented individuals and bring your own proven experience to the role. You will bring to the role a high level of enthusiasm and reliability. With the ability to influence and drive HSE throughout an organisation, you will have the following experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in science, engineering or related field; preferably with Post Grad qualifications in HSE.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in offshore and onshore safety management for Oil & Gas projects and/or operations – with at least 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Fluent English – good written (including report writing) and verbal communication
  • Good working knowledge of applicable regulations, codes of practice, international standards.
  • A good understanding of the ALARP principle and experience in the demonstration of ALARP.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the development and implementation of a HSEMS.
  • Considerable leadership and team building & management skills. 
  • Proven background in the management of incident investigations.
  • Appropriate HSE training cognisant to the position.
  • Sound interpersonal skills including the ability to:
    • use initiative
    • work under pressure while maintaining a proactive ‘can do’ attitude
    • prioritise and respond flexibly to changing demands
